    On Tuesday, the West Bengal Assembly passed a bill named ‘Aparajita’, which aims to strengthen the laws on crime against women.

What is it

    The law covers crimes such as rape, crimes against children, and other sorts of sexual offences.

What remedy

    The bill calls for death penalty if the victim dies or gets in a vegetative state. Other than this rape convicts get life imprisonment in all crimes.

Anything else

    Under this, the investigation would be closed in 21 days. Fast-track courts would also be established.

Also for acid attacks

    Mamta government has also formulated life imprisonment for cases of acid attacks. Also, it would become a non-bailable offence.

Central laws amended

    With this West Bengal has become the first-ever state to amend central laws to strengthen the law on crime against women.
